I agree with on on adding fuel to the fire. It's not a spear. It's a sword. If you want to see a good pic of it go to this link Welcome. I know it says welcome but it will take you to Central High web site and you can see a good pic of it.

Saw in the KPT paper that there was talk about that at the SB meeting last night... from the "it should be directional, too" crowd.
Perry basically said the students picked it, and the adults need to shut their traps about it.

Please don't change the name now, its not a bad name. And if they do change it, for the love of God, please don't call it the Miners or the Coal Miners...dumbest thing I've ever heard for a mascot.

that looks better. My eyes must be more gone that I thought. I swear it looked like a spear on tv. And the whole thing about some wanting Union to be directional too is just........they have already found something they like, why even bring it up.

For me..... Union Bears is a great name....in that it is unique from the other two schools......I was just throwing my suggestions out there I guess. I agree tho.....leave it in the hands of the students....it is going to be their school. That's what everyone must remember. IMHO.....if 3/4 of the adults let our kids be and let them live and go to school where they chose and not what WE WANTED they would make the correct chice and our county would be a lot more civilized.

    Re: Western Miners

The mascots will not be changed, so it won't be Miner anything, it'll still be bears. They had received some complaints from several citizens, Cornett and Perry had, and they are just double checking with the student committee's that were left with the final decision - it probably won't change. Dr. Perry had no problem with going back and asking them btw, he said it was a close vote to begin with picking Union. It won't be opened back up to the public or anything, the students will still have say. And yes, it's a sword and the mascot has absolutely nothing to do with "indians", it will be a medieval warrior. I also think it wasn't "Wise County Central", it was "Wise Central", may be wrong but I think that was it and that was the problem.

    Central High School

Plain old Central High School would make at least three in Virginia...along with those in Lunenburg and Woodstock. There might be more...there used to be one in Painter on the Eastern Shore as well.

I've heard the former referred to as Central-Lunenburg, Lunenburg Central, Central of Lunenburg and just Lunenburg. The point is if the name is just Central, the general public could call it any number of things.

    Re: Central High School

well, those schools are so far away, no one needs to distinguish it from the others, so it'll just be Central.
EXCEPT for the fact no one outside of Wise Co. will remember which new name goes with which old school, so we're all going to call it Central of Wise, unless it's official name is Wise Central.
Then, come playoff time, the whole state will call it Central of Wise, formerly JJ Kelly.
Would give the SB a thumbs-down, since they didn't want any town names to be involved, but they WILL be used for all 3 schools so ppl. can keep them straight.

It looks pretty good IMO. When I first saw the logo it reminded me of a sword from the old NFL Europe team "Scottish Claymores" - different colors & orientation (lying flat instead of upright), but very similar. Look at this link to compare: Scottish Claymores - American football in Scotland.

The think the claymore sword and the related Celtic, Scotch-Irish themes would be very appropriate since the good portion of residents in this area are probably of that cultural descent.
......and I thought truth was universal. Silly me......
